Sophia Luo, a high school student who recently watched the coming-of-age movie “Turning Red,” said she immediately felt feelings of familiarity. As she watched main character Mei attempt to hide her love for a group of boys from her mother, whose approved activity of choice is watching Chinese dramas together, she felt represented.

Luo is one of many Asian American women who saw the Pixar film, released on Disney+ last week, as an affirmation of the cultural tensions that girls from the Asian diaspora often feel, primarily in their teenage years.

“As I hit puberty, after struggling with these new changes as a person, I also had to think about so many other things,” Chinese-Vietnamese Luo said of his education in an Asian immigrant home. “Like, who am I? …Do I belong?

The film, about an Asian-Canadian teenager going through puberty, shows how, for Asians, these teenage years are disconcerting not only because of the physical changes they go through, but also because of the negotiations they between their own heritage and the dominant cultural adolescence. standards, experts said.

Left to right: Priya, voiced by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan; Mei, voiced by Rosalie Chiang; Miriam, voiced by Ava Morse; and Abby, voiced by Hyein Park, in “Turning Red”.Pixar/Disney

“That movie was really cathartic, said Joy Ng, a Chinese-American millennial who also felt deeply connected to the movie. “He’s like, ‘Hey, you can have all these parts of yourself, and you don’t have to suppress it. “”

The beginning of the film shows Mei, voiced by Rosalie Chiang, living much of her life in Toronto, aligned with the path that helicopter parent Ming, voiced by Sandra Oh, had laid out for her. Rather than doing karaoke with her friends, Mei chooses to help out at her family’s temple after school, cook dinner, and stay on top of her homework in addition to participating in the mother-daughter soap opera ritual. His love for boy band 4*Town is relegated to spaces far from home, with his close-knit group of fellow ‘4*Townees’.

But as Mei enters puberty, she drifts away from her sheltered life. Not only does she deal with a new ability to transform into a red panda when she feels strong emotions – an ancient trait that the female members of her family have all found a way to control – but she also deals with the introduction of crushes, desire to spend more time with friends, and stronger development of interests, such as music, away from family.

It’s a heady mix, especially as Mei tries to manage her mother’s expectations, and that causes the uncomfortable inner anxiety that’s so central to the coming-of-age of many girls in the Asian Diaspora, said said Richelle Concepcion, clinical psychologist. and past president of the Asian American Psychological Association. The exploration of sexual attraction, social interactions and outside interests often presents tensions within the family due to the particularly high expectations placed on women in many Asian cultures to be genteel, respectful and careful. that their actions reflect positively on their family, Concepcion said.

“When you think about it, at least from a parent’s perspective, it’s all about saving face,” Concepcion said. “You don’t want your child to have this reputation of being this boy-crazy, sexually curious being.”

A scene from “Turning Red”, featuring Mei Lee.Disney/Pixar

Concepcion added that in immigrant households there is the added burden of maintaining the heritage and values of those who came before. In “Turning Red”, this is depicted through Mei’s family, for example, running a temple that honors the ancestor who started the tradition of the red panda.

“There’s just this cultural difference, where they grow up and just do what they want to do, whereas we kind of have to consider what our elders want for us and how they want us to be here,” he said. Ng recalls of his teenage years. years.

While the media often perpetuates the idea that Western culture is superior, forcing members of the diaspora to choose between worlds, Concepcion said many girls feel stuck in between and unable to conduct themselves authentically.

For Mei, this manifested in lying to her parents about her extracurricular activities and choosing 4*Town-related activities over her temple duties and family time. It symbolized a bicultural teenage tendency to resort to hidden interests or rebellious tendencies on the part of parents, critics say. Ng acknowledged these moments in the film as versions of her own experiences, recalling how she would seek spaces outside of her family to foster her love of hip-hop and dance.

Luo acknowledged that her early teens were dark, and she said she adopted much of the same behavior, turning to heavy use of social media to explore her political views and her love of K-pop groups. , interests that his parents did not immediately approve of. She said that although she wanted to find her own path, she was afraid of losing the bond she shared with her family.

“I remember having a hard time wishing I was white and thinking my life would be easier, Luo said.

She added: “I grew up admiring [my parents] and just wanting to be exactly like them. And when I got to that age, I realized, ‘OK, I can’t exactly follow in your footsteps anymore.'”

The control exercised by many Asian immigrant parents does not come from a malevolent place, as the film shows. In an emotional part of the film, Mei encounters Ming’s teenage daughter, who is curled up on the floor, sobbing for fear of not being enough. It is obvious that Ming’s emotional scars were passed on to his daughter. The couple then share a sobering moment of reflection and empathy. In the end, Mei learns that she doesn’t have to compromise any part of herself, as Ming honors her daughter’s choices.

“They internalize a lot of things that they grew up with,” Ng said of his own parents. “It’s also partly because they’re so busy surviving that they don’t have the time or the privilege to sit down and think about these constructs and say, ‘Let’s challenge these things. That’s what they know.

Netflix is out Women in the house in front of the girl at the window earlier this year, and it quickly reached No. 1 on their Top 10. Kristen Bell was one of the masterminds behind this dark, satirical comedy, and she didn’t disappoint. The story follows Bell, portraying Anna, as she navigates mental health issues following the death of her daughter.

The short eight-episode experience had fans on the edge of their seats, especially with such a wonderful and comprehensive cast of characters. Fans may be wondering where they’ve seen some of this talent before.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Kristen Bell – The Good Place (2016 – 2020)

Kristen Bell Split Screen - The Women of the House and the Good Place

Kristen Bell is the favorite of The women of the house, portrayed by Anna, who suffers from alcohol addiction and mental illness after the death of her daughter. Bell effortlessly makes the audience feel for Anna, while understanding that her mental state makes her a rather unreliable narrator, very different from her role as Eleanor Shellstrop in The right place.

In 2016, a few years after her debut as Anna in Frozen, Bell found herself on television again as the recently deceased Eleanor in The right place. The show ran successfully for four seasons and she was nominated for Golden Globes, TCAs, and Critics Choice Awards, among others, for her performance. If the fans liked The women of the house and i did not see The right place, they should, it’s also a must-have watch.

Mary Holland – Happiest Season (2020)

Mary Holland - The Women of the House and the Happiest Splitscreen Season

Mary Holland started her career mostly in smaller TV roles on shows like Curb your enthusiasm, new girl, Parks and Recreation, and more. She plays Anna’s best friend, Sloane, in women of the house, although her role is much more subtle than other characters in the series. Viewers might recognize this as a major departure from her last film role as Jane in Happiest season.

She starred alongside big names like Kristen Stewart and Aubrey Plaza as Harper’s younger sister. Her character was a little quirky, but fans fell in love with her dedication to her craft and her unconditional love for her family. For those who love a great romantic Christmas comedy, The happiest season is an excellent starting point.

Michael Ealy – 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)

Michael Ealy - Women of the House and 2 Fast 2 Furious Splitscreen

Michael Ealy plays Anna’s ex-husband in The women of the house. Viewers later find out that he also acts as a therapist. Some argue that his character’s mistake of leaving his daughter alone with a serial killer makes him a bad father, but he eventually redeems himself. Ealy began his career in off-Broadway productions, then worked his way into television and film.

Fans might recognize him from his television roles in What follows and Westworld, but he is perhaps most recognizable for his role as Slap Jack in 2 fast 2 furious, the second installment of Fast and Furious film series. His character has a main role in the film.

Tom Riley – Da Vinci’s Demons (2013)

Tom Riley - Split Screen The Women of the House and Da Vinci's Demons

Tom Riley plays the guy next door, Neil, in women of the house, with whom Anna is interested. It is her girlfriend, Lisa, that Anna sees being murdered. Neil has his ups and downs throughout the season, but Tom Riley maintains his incredible acting throughout. Viewers may recognize him primarily for his television work, although he has quite a few movie credits.

Most notably, he plays Leonardo da Vinci in the historical fantasy drama, Da Vinci’s Demons. The film was produced by the BBC but released worldwide, appearing on Starz in the US in 2013. It was a big role for Riley and it ran for three seasons.

Christina Anthony – Mixed-Ish (2019)

Christina Anthony - Women of the House and Mixed Splitscreen

Christina Anthony stays vigilant as the detective on Anna’s case in The women of the house. Detective Lane doesn’t like funny cases, she is determined to follow the truth. Anthony does a terrific job of embodying the satirical elements of a detective in a female-led thriller. Apart from this role, she is a talented actress, singer and writer.

She got her start in comedy and enjoys playing roles that allow her to be funny. Fans may recognize her from some Comedy Central shows like Key and Peele and To crush, but perhaps more particularly like Denise in Mixed-Ish. Mixed-Ish is the sister show of Blackish, and fans say each show does well in some areas and poorly in others. Anthony plays the main character’s aunt, Bow, as he navigates the childhood of a mixed-race family in the 1980s.

Benjamin Levy Aguilar – Filthy Rich (2020)

Benjamin Levy Aguilar - Women of the House and Filthy Rich Split Screen

Rex was a very small supporting role in The women of the housebut his impact on the story was significant and Benjamin Levy Aguilar took the character and brought him to life on screen. Rex was working with Lisa to rob Neil, and while he didn’t end up playing a part in the bigger murder mystery, fans still loved Rex’s character and Aguilar himself.

In fact, Aguilar has a huge following on social media, despite her lack of prominent roles in the entertainment industry. Fans might recognize him as Antonia Rivera in filthy rich, a gothic family drama with soap opera undertones. Most of his recognition comes from this series, but with women of the house, it continues to impact viewers and is on its way to becoming more famous.

Shelley Henning – Teen Wolf (2011 – 2017)

Shelley Henning - Split Screen The Women of the House and Teen Wolf

Lisa doesn’t get much screen time, but the idea of her murder is what drives the whole plot of women at home, and Shelley Henning nailed the evil girlfriend who’s no good cast. Hennig gained recognition for the many beauty pageants she entered before acting, including her big win as Miss Teen USA in 2004.

RELATED: 10 TV Characters Who Deserved Better Than Their Shows Gave Them

Her first major acting role was in days of our lives, for which she won a Teen Choice Award and two Daytime Emmy Awards. But most fans will recognize her for her role in season 3 of Teen Wolf, in which she played Malia Tate from that season until the end of the show.

Cameron Britton – Mindhunter (2017 – 2019)

Cameron Britton - Split Screen Women of the House and Mindhunter

Cameron Britton unexpectedly stole the hearts of viewers intrigued by her screen presence in The women of the house. He plays Buell, Anna’s handyman, who has been fixing a mailbox for years. It is revealed that he used to sleep in his attic and an ex-convict, but his sweet personality and loyalty to family is what redeems him and makes him a beloved character.

In an entirely opposite situation, fans might recognize Britton for his work in Spirit Hunter, as the infamous serial killer, Ed Kemper. His chilling depiction of the killer was his breakout role after being a teacher for eight years. His on-screen poise and natural ability to send shivers down the spine of audiences with dark roles like Ed Kemper in spirit hunter are what makes him a wonderful actor.

Brenda Koo – New Girl (2011 – 2018)

Brenda Koo - Women of the House and New Girl Splitscreen

Carol is one of the most hated characters in The women of the house, but Branda Koo completely embodies the boisterous neighbor trope and does a terrific job portraying this satirical aspect of the show. She had a few credited roles in movies like Urban Explorer and Delirium, but mostly had smaller roles in movies like war dogs and The Bing ring.

She has also had smaller roles on television, and one of the most notable shows is New girl. In the first season, she plays one of the many college-aged girls that Nick begins to connect with. Fans may recognize her from this hit series and other shows, like Two and a half men.

Samsara Leela Yett – Don’t Look Up (2021)

Samsara Yett - Women of the House and Don't Look Up Split Screen

Emma ended up being the most important character in The women of the house. Anna’s hard work and independent research all led to Emma, and Samsara Leela Yett has done an incredible job of fully embracing the child killer trope. She is a budding child star and has mostly worked alongside many big-name stars like Kaley Cucco, Jennifer Lawrence, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

She hasn’t acted much, but fans might recognize her from her role in don’t look up, the Oscar-nominated film currently streaming on Netflix. She only has a few moments on screen, but viewers will instantly recognize her when watching the film. Hopefully, viewers can see her on the red carpet in March 2022.

While television is most often associated with Los Angeles or New York, the Midwest has its fair share of shows set in Chicago or elsewhere in Illinois. Here’s a look at 10 shows set in Illinois — and one show that bucked the trend by filming in the Windy City, but set in the Big Apple.

1. The “Chicago” franchise

“Law & Order” creator Dick Wolf launched a new family of NBC shows in 2012 with “Chicago Fire,” followed by “Chicago PD” in 2014 and “Chicago Med” in 2015. There was also “Chicago Justice, though it only lasted for one season, in 2017. All four shows are set and filmed in Chicago, using real streets, buildings, and other sites as filming locations.

2. “Emilie in Paris”

With two seasons so far on Netflix, the majority of this show is set and filmed in Paris, but Chicago is seen in Season 1 as Emily’s hometown and workplace. The character annoyed Chicagoans in season 1 with her diss of Lou Malnati’s pizza, but the show may have tried to redeem itself in season 2, when Emily received a birthday present from Skokie, Illinois: a deep frozen pizza from a friend at home.

3. “Married… with children”

The Bundys were a mainstay of Fox TV from 1987 to 1997. The show was set in an unnamed suburb of Chicago, with the opening footage showing scenes like Grant Park and Lake Shore Drive, and the exterior of their home shot in Deerfield. Alas, the rest of the show was filmed in California.

4. “Rosanne”

This ABC show ran from 1988 to 1997, featuring the Conner family in the fictional town of Lanford, Illinois. The location of this town is unclear, but it was thought to be in Fulton County, southwest of Peoria, or a suburb west of Chicago. In real life, the show was filmed in Los Angeles, with some location shots filmed in Evansville, Indiana. Additionally, Laurie Metcalf, who played Roseanne’s sister Jackie Harris, was born in Carbondale, grew up in Edwardsville, and graduated from Illinois State University in 1976.

5. “Family Matters”

This family comedy, derived from the show “Perfect Strangers”, aired from 1989 to 1998, first on ABC and then on CBS. The show took place in Chicago but was filmed in California. The exterior of the Winslow House was a real home in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, but it was torn down in 2017 to make way for condos.

“Family Matters” aired from 1989 to 1998 and was set in Chicago.

6. “Chicago Hope”

This medical drama aired on CBS from 1994 to 2000, taking place in a fictional hospital in Chicago. Despite the Chicago setting and its namesake, filming took place almost entirely in Los Angeles.

7. “The Good Wife”

Airing on CBS from 2009 to 2016, this legal and political drama followed a couple in the aftermath of a sex scandal. It was set in Chicago but was filmed primarily in New York. Actor Gary Cole, who was born in Park Ridge and attended Illinois State University, had a recurring role on “The Good Wife” as Kurt McVeigh, a ballistics expert.

8. “Mike & Molly”

Airing on CBS from 2010 to 2016, this sitcom followed a Chicago couple who met in an Overeaters Anonymous group and began dating. (Fun fact: Melissa McCarthy, who played Molly, is an Illinois girl herself, born in Plainfield and attending school in Joliet.) However, the show itself was filmed in Los Angeles, at the except for a few exterior photographs in Chicago. (Another fun fact: Molly’s house used the same set as the Illinois TV show “Roseanne.”)

9. “Shameless”

From 2011 to 2021, Showtime’s “Shameless” followed a dysfunctional working-class Chicago family, the Gallaghers. It was actually an adaptation of a British series of the same name. Unlike most other shows set in the Windy City, this one was partially shot in Chicago, specifically the Lawndale neighborhood, with other scenes shot in California.

10. “As the World Turns”

“ATWT” ruled the soap opera world from 1956 to 2010 on CBS. It takes place in a fictional town called Oakdale, Illinois, but was filmed in New York. There was, however, at least one genuine Illinois connection: Kathryn Hays, who played Kim Hughes from 1972 until the end of the series, was born in Princeton and raised in Joliet. In 2019, Princeton honored her with a star on the Walk of Fame outside the Apollo Theater.

…and a show that was filmed in Illinois, but didn’t take place here:

11. “Empire”

“Empire,” a popular musical drama that aired on Fox from 2015 to 2020, was a flip-flop from how most of the TV shows above were made: It took place in New York City. , but was filmed in Chicago. The story centered on the fictional Empire Entertainment, a family-run hip-hop and entertainment company.

With each generation, more Pokémon are discovered and added to the global Pokedex. In addition to entirely new designs, players have also seen regional forms of Pokémon added to this total roster, providing players with new designs to enjoy classic Pokémon. Among these is a recent live-action trailer for the latest game in the series, Pokemon Legends: Arceusdisplayed exactly what the Hisuian form of Growlithe would like in real life.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus takes players to a time before the events of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl but still retains most of the gameplay elements from previous games. There are currently three regional forms that Pokemon can take: Alolan, Galarian, and Hisuian. These regional forms rework the original appearance of these Pokémon and are unique to a specific region.

Released in January this year, Pokemon Legends: Arceus has been commercially successful so far and has released a number of trailers detailing its gameplay and features. In this trailer, the premise revolves around a dramatic scene inspired by a soap opera. The scene begins with a woman talking to a stranger off camera, desperately declaring her desire to travel the world with this mysterious character. She travels all over the room with exaggerated movements, throwing her hands above her head and acting as if her passion and emotions are overwhelming. The woman states that she has settled on this unknown character, that she has chosen this character, and that she hopes that they will choose her again. The camera cuts to show that this woman has spoken to a real-life version of the Hisian form of Growlithe.

This unique clip brings one of the Pokedex’s most interesting regional forms to life and through an interesting lens. As Pokemon Legends: Arceus take it Pokemon series in a new direction, this trailer also reimagines what catching a Pokemon looks like. The Hisian form of Growlithe was first introduced in the eighth generation of Pokemon, and this real-life version looks exactly as players probably imagined: with an overwhelming amount of fur.

Pokemon Regional Forms are a great way to add new looks to the game’s Pokedex without having to create new creatures from scratch. It not only allows creators to Pokemon to give a fresh look to designs that have been around for decades, but it also gives players new creatures to hunt down and catch.

Again, regional shapes aren’t exciting for everyone, especially those looking for completely new designs. New looks for older Pokemon may be considered inferior to what some community members are looking for. Anyway, this new trailer for Pokemon Legends: Arceus brings an interesting version of Growlithe to life for fans to enjoy.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is now available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

The Righteous Gemstones (2019–present) – HBO

John Goodman, Edi Patterson and Adam DeVine star in this dark comedy about a family of televangelists who take the word of the lord through their mega-church and then live behind the scenes, all thanks to generous donations from the church. Each of the characters on Virtuous Gemstones is funny in its own way.

Even with mega-churches, however, it’s all about business. At Virtuous Gemstones the family is determined to grow, while bankrupting other small churches in the process. Like the other shows, there’s a greedy patriarch and immature kids who don’t quite have what it takes, but love to reap the benefits of the family business.

The Kings of Napa (2022) – CLEAN

Kings of Napa characters face off.

The Oprah Winfrey Network has gotten in the ring with this new soap opera about the King family working in the wine industry. Rather than the patriarch having to choose who will take over, however, he sadly passes away, leaving his three children to fend for themselves on the business side unprepared.

Naturally, they each have their own idea of how things should be handled, and there’s a lot of heads, heavy drama, lies, backstabbing, and all the other elements typical of the genre.

Nonetheless, regardless of the reservations, Michael eventually finds himself taking over the business in the hopes that it will help keep his quirky, quirky family together.

The Crown (2016-Present) – Netflix

Elizabeth putting a crown on Philip in The Crown

Yes, it’s the monarchy, but it’s still a business, and Queen Elizabeth II still sits on the throne, well past her 90s. Praised for its accuracy and its attempt to stay as true to the facts as possible, The crownone of the best TV shows of 2020, tells the story of how Queen Elizabeth II was cast in the limelight to take control of a leadership position after the death of her father.

Not only does she face serving as Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, but she also faces the challenge of being a woman taking the job instead of a man since she had no male siblings. Although there is less swearing and low humor in this show compared to others of the Family Empire variety, The crown still includes the same drama, scandal, politics and power struggles. It’s just much more majestic in depiction as Queen Elizabeth battles her family members, as well as other forces.

Dynasty (2017-Present) – The CW

Elizabeth Gillies as Fallon in Dynasty

About as soapy as they come, no plot direction is too silly or amazing to Dynasty, much like the original 1980s soap opera of the same name on which it is based. In fact, there were even twists on Dynasty no one saw it coming. The Carringtons have obscene wealth from their massive Carrington Atlantic conglomerate, and they’re not afraid to show it.

Along with the billions, however, there’s plenty of family drama, including a daughter desperate to make something of herself out of her father’s shadow, illegitimate children and siblings who pop up out of nowhere to taking their part, and even benevolent children who speak out against all that family stands for, threatening reputation. Each Carrington grew up getting what they wanted, so no one is ever ready to back down.
